Synopsis

“Viruses: Good or Evil” is a short introduction to biological viruses. Suitable for the
general public, the film presents a gallery of three-dimensional virus structures
in the context of life and the universe at large. Viruses are integral to the
existence of life, having long and complex relationships with all forms of life that we
know of. Viruses have changed the course of human history and the course of
evolution. Although the discovery of viruses is recent biomedical science, the
diseases they inflict on people have been known long before history was written, and
inflicted on other life before humanity existed. As we begin to understand what
viruses are in the universe, we are also realizing that viruses can benefit humanity
by curing disease and improving agriculture. Humanity’s relationship to this
fundamental life force is both good and evil.
